The U.S. House of Representatives voted 220-204 to pass a war powers resolution calling for an end to U.S. military operations against Iran — the third such vote since the conflict began, with seven Republicans joining all Democrats in support this time.
The vote, held late Tuesday, September 15, 2026, came after months of military operations that began in February without congressional authorization. It marks another political blow to President Donald Trump's administration, which continues the war despite growing bipartisan opposition.
Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA), who led the effort, said: "Remember when Donald Trump said this war would last just a few weeks?" He added that it is time for Congress to "actually ask tough questions, as the Constitution directs us to do, rather than be subservient to another warmongering administration".
Republican Rep. Brian Mast of Florida, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, criticized the resolution, questioning which military resources Democrats want to remove from a region where he said Iran remains a threat, and stated that Trump is against "forever wars".
The war has cost the U.S. over $38 billion and claimed the lives of 18 service members, according to Congressional Budget Office estimates. The resolution is symbolic in nature — it does not carry the weight of law and is not presented to the president — but it reflects growing public discontent with the conflict ahead of the midterm elections.
